Upcycled Grain Project, the sustainability initiative founded by award-winning snack brand Rutherford & Meyer rescues the leftover grain from beer brewing to create tasty and indulgent crisps.
The first-ever upcycled crisps to hit Woolworths shelves have a surprising origin story.
Rutherford & Meyer founded the Upcycled Grain Project (UGP) in 2019, where it has since flourished among a dedicated team who are passionate about artisan-made products and the planet.
Rutherford & Meyer have introduced the Upcycled Grain Project to make the world a better place and the concept was born out of the idea that food manufacturers should leave the planet better than they found it.
By repurposing wheat from local breweries, the Upcycled Grain Project has created a smart and sustainable recipe for your new charcuterie-board favourites.
When discovering the amount of food waste leftover from beer-brewing processes, Upcycled Grain Project was struck with the innovative idea to transform ‘spent’ grain into tasty, golden crisps.
Wheat grains, which are traditionally discarded, are instead mixed with other natural ingredients, including at least 26 per cent real fruit, to create vegan-friendly snacks that don’t call for new resources.
The genius idea behind the project is that no material gets left behind, only delicious, healthy crackers that do their part to reduce food waste. Their brand ethos is as easy to digest as the products themselves: they grow, brew and ‘rescue’ grains and turn them into something special.
The upcycling process isn’t just good for the planet, but good for consumers, too. The spent grain helps to create nutty, sweet and wholesome treats without any alcoholic aftertaste, making these snacks perfect for the whole family.
What’s more, this unlikely ingredient is bursting with nutritional value. When steeping the melt barley for beer-brewing none of the goodness is lost, the rescued grain is packed with fibre and protein, as well as the added benefits of vitamins and amino acids. Additionally, all crisps are vegan-friendly, GMO-free and 100 per cent natural.
Upcycled Grain Crisps are available in 4 delicious variants, Raisin and Rosemary, Orange and Sesame, Cranberry & Coconut, and Fig & Cardamom. Each crisp pairs beautifully with fruit paste, cheese or dips, making them a go-to option on a grazing board, in a lunchbox or a platter for two.
What’s more, this new bite-size format can be simply enjoyed on their own for wholesome snacking on-the-go, in the office or an energy boost for an afternoon pick-me-up.
The range will be rolling out across selected Woolworths supermarkets in the biscuit aisle. As the packaging suggests, this is the only crisp brand customers can enjoy knowing that each crisp is made with upcycled grains.
