In a nation boasting over 30,000 enchanting picnic locations, Food Box Mate has curated a list of Australia’s top 25 picnic spots based on an in-depth analysis of over 12,500 crowd-sourced reviews from the past two years.

The research has delved beyond the most obvious picnic locations, revealing hidden gems and cherished spots that Australians love to enjoy.

New South Wales’ Fagan Park Secures The #1 Spot

Fagan Park in Galston (New South Wales) secured the coveted #1 position, impressing picnickers with its serene ambiance, picturesque international themed gardens, playgrounds, and numerous picnic spots with electric barbecues. This scenic Hornsby Shire parkland is truly deserving of being recognised as Australia’s favourite picnic spot.

Two Victorian parks secured their positions on the winner’s podium: Maroondah Reservoir Park in 2nd, with Yan Yean Reservoir Park rounding out the top 3. Boasting numerous shaded picnic spots and inviting walking trails along serene reservoirs, both locations promise a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration for picnickers.

Victoria Claims ‘Best Picnic Spots’ With 9 of the Top 25

Victoria leads the pack with nine locations in the top 25, closely followed by New South Wales and Queensland with seven each, and Western Australia with two.

While parks in Northern Territory, South Australia, or Tasmania didn’t make it into the top 25, they weren’t overlooked in Food Box Mate’s research. Darwin Waterfront Precinct in the Northern Territory, Mount Lofty Botanic Garden in South Australia, and Deloraine Train Park in Tasmania emerged as the top picnic spots in their respective states.

Methodology: A Deeper Dive into Australians’ Picnic Preferences

Food Box Mate’s unique approach involved filtering 30,646 potential locations to those with more than 100 reviews, eliminating outliers. The in-depth analysis focused on 3,187 places, scrutinising 12,564 reviews from the past two years containing the keyword “picnic.”

Factors considered included overall popularity, popularity specifically for picnics, the ratio of picnic reviews to total reviews, and the average rating of picnic reviews.

David Bruce, the creator of FoodBoxMate.com, who carried out the independent research, said, “Australians are looking for picnic spots equipped with modern barbecue facilities, ample shaded seating, and clean public restrooms, all nestled within a tranquil natural setting.”

“As the Australian summer heats up this December, we’re fortunate to have an abundance of remarkable locations to enjoy with friends and family. This research found the top 25 picnic spots, but there are thousands of incredible places dotted around the country.”
